Entlebuch Alpine Descent

Saturday, September 27, 2025

Every year towards the end of September, the UNESCO Entlebuch Biosphere Reserve is transformed into a colorful spectacle rich in traditions, customs, and entertainment. Seven Alpine farming families dressed in traditional costumes and carrying Chüjer (a type of wooden basket) drive over 300 cows and cattle from their Alpine huts around Sörenberg down to Schüpfheim, accompanied by colorful folklore groups. The magnificent procession through the village remains the highlight of the Entlebuch Alpine Descent, which has long since become much more than a traditional festival for Alpine farmers and herdsmen. With regularly over 10,000 visitors, the Entlebuch Alpine Descent has grown into a true folk festival.

Here, guests from near and far have the opportunity to experience folk customs up close: whether it's flower-decorated cattle, alphorn blowing, or yodeling – the passion is palpable everywhere. At the large market, you can discover the best regional products – from alpine cheese and sausage to delicious jams. The lovingly designed restaurants run by local clubs will also take care of your physical well-being, so that you can enjoy the festival to the fullest with good food and drink.

The combination of alpine farming, which has changed significantly but remains traditional, and a modern public event offers unforgettable moments and gives many laypeople an impressive encounter with traditional, folk customs from the Entlebuch region.
