The 2030 Agenda for sustainable development as drawn up by the United Nations in 2015 is a plan of action for people and the planet. At its heart are the 17 international Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which are aimed at governments, companies and regions like Entlebuch. We take the 17 goals seriously, and have incorporated them into our three strategic targets:
Preserving the diversity of nature and culture.
Promoting a strong and innovative regional economy.
Facing the future together as a region – and an organisation – capable of learning.
All UNESCO biospheres are model sustainable development regions. In 2011, UNESCO declared us a model biosphere for the world – a great honour, and a great responsibility too. As a region, we implement our sustainability goals alongside the people who live here. After all, each of us individually can play a part in working towards an equitable future.

The sustainability programme Swisstainable unites businesses and organisations across the entire Swiss tourism sector. It focuses on the development of tourism businesses and tourism destinations across various topics of sustainability, making existing and planned sustainability efforts visible. Participation in the sustainability programme is open to all tourism businesses and tourism destinations in Switzerland. To account for different preconditions and the degree of sustainable commitment, the programme is structured into three levels: Level I - committed | Level II - engaged | Level III - leading.
At the operational level, the management office of the UNESCO Biosphere Entlebuch is part of the Swisstainable sustainability programme and is classified as Level III – leading. The UNESCO Biosphere Entlebuch is also part of the Swisstainable sustainability programme as a tourism destination and is likewise classified as Level III – leading. The programme for tourism destinations builds on the programme for businesses, with additional requirements to structurally anchor and further develop sustainability topics across the entire destination.
