Moorland centre of excellence
Over the past 150 years, moors have diminished more than any other habitat in Switzerland. As a result, they are now among the rarest and most valuable landscapes in the country. As well as providing a home to many threatened and highly specialised species, intact moorland is critically important to the climate as it soaks up carbon.
In our capacity as a moorland centre of excellence, preserving and promoting intact moorland is important to us. We seek to enhance moors and moorland habitats with the aim of becoming a nationally important centre for coordination and information on moorland habitats. We are continuing to expand our integrated approach, developing innovative educational and research projects, creating tourism packages themed around moors and moorland and utilising synergies while devising measures to support rehydration and the preservation of natural assets.
Since the moorland enhancement activities began, six improvement concepts have been devised and three have been implemented. Moor enhancement projects are currently under way for Gruenholz (Schüpfheim), Mittlerschwarzenegg (Flühli) and the the Hilferenpass area of moorland (Flühli and Escholzmatt-Marbach).
